Join us for a weekend retreat designed for real calligraphy enthusiasts, looking to elevate their skills and explore the art of composition. You will be taught all the techniques that you need to create your own artwork using your favourite tool, from nib and ink to brush and watercolour paints. This retreat is perfect for those beyond the beginner level, who are ready to push their creative boundaries to the max.

Your 2 expert tutors, Kirsten Burke and Maisie Minett will both be available all weekend to guide you and share the knowledge and tips and tricks they've learnt.

You will need to select a passage that resonates with you and learn to craft it into a visually stunning artwork. You’ll explore advanced techniques for creating impactful compositions. From initial planning to adding the finishing touches, our tutors will be there at each step, ensuring you leave with a completed piece you are sure to be proud of.

ITINERARY

Friday

We’ll get together from 6 pm in the Beach House Guest House for a ‘meet and mingle’ session over a glass of bubbles and a yummy buffet dinner.  You can check in from 2.30 pm. We’ll do a quick intro and have a chat in more detail about what’s going to happen over the weekend.

With your tutor's help, you will put together your own ‘inspiration book’ of lettering styles you love. We’ll use this to guide your calligraphy practice for the weekend.

Saturday

You’ll have a huge choice of cooked or continental breakfasts to enjoy before the workshop, which will start at 9.30 - 3pm. We’ll have a delicious hot lunch together and then the rest of the afternoon and evening will be yours to continue to study solo till 5pm, or explore the local area.  We will focus on refining your style, which will mean less structured learning and much more one-to-one support.

There are lots of places to explore. Pop into Chichester and visit the Cathedral or the Novium Museum, or check out what’s on at Pallant Art Gallery!

If you’d rather stay and keep practising your calligraphy in the afternoon, that’s also fine.

In the evening, for those that wish to join in, we will reserve a table for you at 7pm at The Wittering pub, 100m down the road which has a fabulous choice of food and drinks available.

Sunday

After a delicious hot or continental breakfast, there's the choice to have a stroll along the sandy beach to take in the spectacular views before we get going again on our calligraphy again. If you prefer, you can stay at the guesthouse and enjoy a cuppa and a chat or head to the studio for an extra hours study. Sunday's workshop will start at 10.30 am, but from 9.30 am the studio will be open for any early birds.

We’ll have a hot buffet lunch and finish around 3 pm giving you time to explore the area further, or plenty of time to hit the road to get home before dusk.

Location: The Beach House is located in the beautiful coastal village of West Wittering with the beach a short walk away. Inspired by the serene and relaxed atmosphere of beach living, each room combines casual elegance with a touch of nautical charm.

Group Size: Limited spots are available to maintain an intimate and focused environment with 15 guests being the maximum number at the studio.

Cancellation/Refunds

Our retreats are non-refundable unless we have someone on a waiting list who can fill your spot. For this reason, we recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance to protect against any unforeseen circumstances that may prevent your attendance. In the unlikely event that we must cancel the retreat, we will offer a transfer to a new date or provide a full refund. We will make every effort to give ample notice in such a case.
